Woo hoo on being asked! That's always a good step. I think the best way to respond is to say you're now a freelancer and you are happy to discuss your rates with him at his convenience. That way you give the impression of being willing to negotiate on price but also state up front you are only writing for cash now. If you start bringing ill parents and busy schedule in to it, he might balk and use that as an excuse.
