Rasputina, Knoxville, TN, 8/03/07

Okay, I was trying to think of how long I've been a fan of this band and came up with at least 12 years. They are in the top five of my favorite bands, and this was the very first opportunity I ever had to see them live! I was so so so excited! Their opening act was alright, very generic chick rock with some French thrown in if you ask me. The husband and I sat at a table in back and just listened. I had been intending to sit through Rasputina, too, but who the heck was I kidding? I was down on the floor on the last song of the opening act. It was mostly an older crowd, around my age, so there wasn't all the shoving and crushing on the floor that I remember from being a teenager, which was nice (I also don't think I've been to a show with a smaller crowd than this one before, which was nice for me, but made me sad for them).
So they opened with Hunter's Kiss, which is because it's one of my favorite songs. (I've linked the live version because I actually like it better than the record version). Right after that, they launched into a cool, almost jazzy version of Transylanian Concubine. They had a bit of sound problems which Melora seemed not in the least bit happy about (she's a total perfectionist, in fact she joked that she had been trying to break out of that and had taken a class to teach her how to jam and that she was going to try that on the next song, and the proceeded to play the next song exactly the same as the album. XD)
Some of my favorite Melora comments of the night were, "I recently contemplated suicide after cannibalizing a gay relative that I'd been having sex with," and "I recently came across some tapes of Osama Bin Laden that I have translated on my own" to make the next song [paraphrased] (just before launching into Choose Me For Champion), and when she basically said that the last three songs "which have been smooshed together for no apparent reason" were basically a representation of how the events of 9/11 could be blamed on G.W. (When everyone cheered, she said she was proud of us "Knoxvillians," and that the cheering when she said that had gotten steadily less and less over the years, and she thinks that's because "people are gradually getting used to the idea." XD)
Though, I must say the best moment of the night came after they came out for an encore. Everyone was shouting requests, and someone stupidly shouted "play that song you wanna play." Melora looked up and started talking about how when she had a regular job she hated being told what to do, and even now in her irregular job she hated it, so she would, in fact, play the song she wanted to play... after which she and the rest of the group launched into the first verse of Sir Mix Alot's "I Like Big Butts." XD Could. Not. Believe it. Amazing.
In general, I think they aren't a band that "puts on a good show" in the typical sense. There's not much of that "spectacle" aspect as most rock concerts have. Honestly, they are stuck in one spot due to the nature of their instruments. But still, I thought they were amazing to see. They played a lot of my favorite songs and, well, I just love them in general, so I loved it. I can't wait for them to come back! XD
