Jul. 30th, 2008 11:15 amUgh, I meant to post about this sooner, but the more info we get, the sadder it seems. There was a church shooting in Knoxville on Sunday at the Unitarian Universalist church downtown. I heard about it from work. Apparently there was a children's production of Annie going on there at the time. (As a side note, a very sweet woman who stayed at the hotel this week was in town because her daughter was in the play. They had decided to just plan their entire summer vacation around the play and come to Knoxville for the week. D: They left something very valuable in the hotel, actually, and while I would totally understand if they never called after what has happened, I sort of hope they do. I know I only knew them for a week, but I'd still like to know they're okay.)
So far two people have died, and five more were injured.
According to an article I read on volunteertv.com (it was harder than I thought to find good info on this!):
Knoxville's police chief says the man accused of a gun attack at a church that killed two people and seriously wounded five others apparently selected the congregation because of its liberal social stance.
[...]
Owen said Adkisson was apparently frustrated over being out of work and had a "stated hatred of the liberal movement."
The church is known for advocating women's and gay rights and founding an American Civil Liberties Union chapter.
*sigh* Very sad, indeed. I guess the only upside is that none of the kids were injured. Just, you know, scarred for life. :(
