Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] sunrunnersioned for the link: Prop 8 Passes.

*siiiigh* How can this country take such a massive step forward, and yet still see one of the bluest states in our nation, my home state (along with FL and AZ), vote for such hate?

I feel I'm out of words for how much this hurts, dude. I said what I could for now.

Just... :(

Taking steps forward, however: did you see this? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAOkwjQdm6Q) It shocked the hell out of me to see Mayor Sanders say what he did, but it made me sohappy. :)

And, you know, I keep staring at that article, somehow still astonished by how HAPPY those people look. I just... I don't know, man.

I DID see it! I re-linked it from you on my election squee post last night because it just made my cry like a baby. So much love for him right now.

Someone else on my F-List pointed out that while there's a provisional "pass" on Prop 8, there are still a massive number of absentee and provisional ballots which have yet to be counted, and the numbers are still something like 400K between the two, so hypothetically there's hope.

As to why it passed? There are a huge, huge number of people who don't really bother to think about things unless they're directly effected. Out of curiosity, do you know if there's the chance for legal challenge based upon unconstitutionality if the policy *does* pass?

I suppose so, but I don't think I've seen in my lifetime a time that absentee votes turned around a election or vote.

There are a huge, huge number of people who don't really bother to think about things unless they're directly effected.

There's that. There's also that some people care too much about things they THINK will affect them, even when it won't. All those people in heterosexual marriages that think gay marriage is a threat to theirs? I'd really, REALLY like to know wtf they're smoking.

I mean, I get how it passed--some people are stupid, some are bigots, some are just plain lazy, and some are all three--but I'll never understand whhhhyyyyy, if that makes sense...

It does make sense. Apparently, there are a lot of insecure people who don't understand A. how the language in the Bible works, and B. that giving someone else equal rights doesn't actually lessen/cheapen their own rights. It's not like the benefits someone else gets in a marriage are actually going to impact an uninvolved party one way or the other, you know? But a lot of people can't see the big picture. I wonder if it's also a more subtle back-lash reaction to the financial mess - people think they're taking control of *something*, even if they don't bother to really think out the ramifications.

Also, it SUCKS >.< It's not fair and blah. But I voted, and I donated, so what else can ya do? =/ Hopefully it'll come up again in polls and/or judicial decisions, or something >.>

It's where I'm FROM. I lived in CA from age 1 to 18. I've been in TN for ten years now.

You did do what you could. Just a shame other people are so stupid.

A. how the language in the Bible works

Amen. And I'm not religious AT ALL, but anyone who uses the bible to defend restricting the rights of gays is obviously not reading the whole thing, and BLATANTLY ignoring Jesus' message of love and acceptance. On top of that, if you ARE religious (not you; I'm speaking of the general "you"), whether you personally believe gays are wrong or not, you should not believe that you are the one whose job it is to judge and condemn anyone else. You should believe that job belongs to God. *siiiiiigh*

I don't know. I have a hard time believing that the financial crisis has anything to do with it. As an LJ friend pointed out, the margins are getting closer and closer each time this issue is raised. It passed by a smaller percent this time than last, so there's room to hope, even if it's a shame it passed at all.

I don't understand 'why' either. It doesn't make sense. I'm at a loss for words.

I am so very disappointed in our state (as well as those states so passed similar bans). Sadly I cannot say I am overly surprised, but still it makes me angry, and sad to think that there are so many people in this state who think that it's okay to be nothing more than narrow-minded bigots.

I live in San Diego, and while I don't currently have a girlfriend, nor do I foresee wanting to get married, that is vastly different from being told I'm not allowed to.

Thanks for the link because otherwise I might not have seen it. It was very emotional.

The problem is that California isn't actually all that blue overall, it's more of a purple colour. There's a considerable divide between the coast, especially the north coast, which is extremely blue, and inland areas, which get redder. In this case, apparently, religious blacks and Latinos contributed a lot to this prop passing. And I dunno why, but this seems to push a button for a lot of otherwise liberal people. I live in the south bay near San Jose, but even on my street there were "Yes on 8" (and McCain/Palin) signs.
