"Try to relax," said Snape's voice from somewhere across the room. "It will help if you stop fighting it."
He tried to do as he was asked, all the while wishing he had not been afforded this very personal opportunity to find out just how half the stuff on Snape's shelves had got there, but it didn't seem to diffuse the pain.
"I'm trying, but it's not helping!" he whined.
"Certainly it is."
"No it's not! It still hurts!"
"Of course it does. I didn't say that's what it would help." He heard the tink, tink sound of Snape's fingernail tapping on glass. "It helps them settle more nicely."
