MOTHERFUCKER.

Does anyone know anything about Cat 3 and Cat 5? I hear it's being installed on work computers, and I'm pretty sure it means she'll be able to monitor every damn thing we do. Which means no more work internet.

FUCK. What the hell am I supposed to do? No matter what she says, if we're slow, there's only enough work to fill a couple of my eight hours.

Some geeky computer person tell me I'm wrong. Please.

... I'm gonna have to go with a "huh?" on this one. I mean, it's more than possible I've never heard of a software by those names, but all it brings to mind is cables, which would have nothing to do @ logging/spying on your 'net usage.

Also, and it may vary state to state, BUT, afaik, an employer has to inform you that your usage is being monitored before they can do so.

They are cables, from what I can find about them, used for networking computers. When she said they were putting them in, I said "what's that?" and she gave me a vague "it goes to the computers." wtf?

And that may be true, but as TN is an "at will" state, they can fire me without having to give me a reason, so it would be very easy to spy and get away with it, and then fire me for "breaking the rules" without telling me why. *sigh*

Oooops, was trying to edit my comment when you replied. Let's try that again:

Electronic Communications Privacy Act, employers have the legal responsibility of basing their electronic communications policies on legitimate business interests, informing employees in writing what their privileges are, and telling them to what extent monitoring will take place.

And yeah, most States ARE at-will, so I'd find out what the usage policy is. :(

... although, that said, bitch sounds like she doesn't know her ass from her elbow, so... ::g::

Yes, it offers wireless for all.

The policy is pretty much 'don't fucking use it unless it's for work use'. Of course, I'm the only person who does a damn other thing she says. Technically this computer 'doesn't have' internet. But I discovered only one browser is blocked, so using mozilla via usb works. >.> Everyone else, though, just drags the chair to the other computer and uses it in front of her, and never gets in trouble.

Ugh. I'm annoyed and venting now. Sorry.

Are you guys not on a central network now? Because that's all Cat3/5/6 is - different sorts of cable. If they're setting up a network, security and privacy and user control is all set by the network admin - but that doesn't have anything to do with the type of cable they're running.

You might want to ask for a copy of your network policies so you can make sure they don't trip anyone up for violating some rule that nobody even knows is in effect?
