[Poll #1297857]

ETA: Since I chose the "one or more" option on the first question, I will explain here. The absolute insanity is a given, but the "normal situations handled in a weird way" answer can also be true. I think this is the case when the handling of the normal situations in a weird way causes the characters to go OCC. Or stupid. Yes, that.

Okay, seriously, I think belly dancing Reid might be crossing the line into crack.

But I suddenly have a HUGE desire to see Hotch cross-dressing.

Besides, he doesn't have the hips for it. ;)

This is true. :D

I would use the "hips don't lie" Hotch icon, but I don't have it, as I think that also is toeing the line of crack. ^_~

Speaking of cracky icons...I made some from that movie, Psycho Beach Party....

And yes, the cheek in the "cheeky" icon is indeed TG's. ;)

Funny you should mention that. I listened to the commentary on the DVD for Psycho Beach Party (by the director, Robert Lee King, and the guy who wrote the play/screenplay, Charles Busch--he also played Monica Stark in the movie--the red headed "female" cop) and King says that at one point, he went in when TG was getting his butt scarified to see how it was going. TG looks at him and says "For this, I went to Julliard?"

King said he laughed and then TG mentioned getting a double for the scene, but King told him no, because he'd seen Tales of the City and figured that most of the audience for PSB would have, too.

So, no, no ass stand in for that scene. *G*

HEE!

TG looks at him and says "For this, I went to Julliard?"

Oh, how I love his sense of humor. Funniest thing in the S3 outtakes? NON-UNION CRICKET!

I love crack!fic if the characters remain "in character". (I've written a fair amount . . .)

The challenge, and test, of good crack!fic is that everyone remains in character and acts accordingly, no matter how bizarre the situation (Hotch becomes a pencil, Reid has a side job as a hooker . . .).

There is a difference between stupid fic and crack fic. If you can write Hotch becomes a pencil and the pencil remains Hotchly then that is good crack. If it solves crimes and gives someone a Hotchalanche, that is even better. If Reid becomes the equivalent of a 15 year old girl and starts wailing and listening to My Chemical Romance, but without an actual transformation, then the fic becomes stupid.

Does that make any kind of sense?

Yes, it makes perfect sense, and I think I pretty much agree with that 100%.

Now someone has to write crime solving pencil!Hotch fic. That's all there is to it. :D

This conversation goes around every once in a while, and is why I specify type of crack in exchange sign-ups. I like the kind where the situation is the product of insanity but the fic is internally consistent. I don't like the kind where there is just rampant randomosity. And both get called crack--for instance, the fic I wrote in which the last horcrux is an atomic bomb: cracked situation, but I did try to have everything that went on follow from the premise. It wasn't atomic horcrux! cows on parade! waterproof bath towels! bats driving watermelon clown cars! unresolved missing underwear! jagged-edged cheese! marbles in the quilt! chicken soup made with honey and pork chops! ...all in 3000 words.

Heh.

And both get called crack

Exactly why I was asking.

And yeah, I'm not such a fan of rampant insanity. I prefer one bit of insanity handled in an IC and preferably reasonable way. :)

I came here through the HP newsletter expecting to find HP discussion, but ended up in Criminal Minds land. The cross-dressing!Hotch thing made me notice, and then check to see which newsletter I came from. That's when I noticed all the Reid and Morgan and the cute icon of Reid and his mom. Weirdly enough, CM is my favorite fandom, not HP. :D

I once read a fic where Reid turned into a cat and Garcia took care of him when it happened. And I think Morgan found out...or maybe JJ? It was a weird situation handled normally and was sooooo cute. That is one example of crack. Another would be a fic full of cliches put in on purpose in a funny and smart way. Going overboard is the worst thing that could happen to a crack!fic.

I thought I'd seen you're lj name before (you make icons, yes? [edit: oh, look at that, I have a couple! I guess you do! *G*])! Yes, I'm a former HP snupin shipper turned CM fandomer, but I figured I had to have been mentioned in a HP newsletter, because random people have shown up! *G*

Ahaha! You don't happen to have a link, do you? That sounds... amazing, actually, if it was done well. :D

Yeah, I make icons from time to time, but I'm terrible at it. I actually made the Prentiss one [livejournal.com profile] innerslytherin is using.

No, I don't have the fic and I really want to find it again. I was hoping someone here would have it. It was done really well, I was surprised how good it actually was. I might try [livejournal.com profile] cmficfinders eventually.

"Normal situations handled in a weird way" -- I think usually this is just humour, and not crack, although it depends on the piece.

"Weird situations, even if they're handled in a realistic/reasonable manner or not" -- is more likely to be crack, but conversely, depending on the piece, actually could be done as regular humour, I think.

"Weird situations handled in a weird way--absolute insanity!" -- is crack, and not always that great. ;P It takes a fine touch.
