Ri turns 4 today (long time flisters, can you believe it?!). What can I get a 4 year old for her birthday that's cheap? She's old enough now to realize it if Aunt Jenn didn't get her a gift.

Book?

Fairy wand? Anything glittery really would have been a big hit when my little girl was 4.

You can get great kid's books for a god price. Also, Ms. Potato Head, which was like the best thing ever when I was that age.

My twin godkids, who are about the same age, love the "This Is..." series of books. Venice is a huge hit, but their mother reports that all of the ones they have are requested quite frequently.

I hope $12 counts as cheap.

If not, Dover Books have some really cool coloring books for cheap. At four, those are great for trips.

If you get Dover Books, you can also get temporary tattoos and stickers. Those little ones cost about a dollar. If you put three Dover Books on the same theme in a package with crayons or markers, and decorate the outside of the package yourself, it will be her favorite present.

A frisbee or a ball is a good present, if it comes with a coupon book of play dates with you. You can get a bouncy ball at the supermarket.

I'm so happy for you that she's four.

Oh, that reminds me -- soft jacks, if they still make them, aren't expensive and are fun and Bubbles!!!! It's springtime and bubbles were a big hit with resident four year old.

Also seconding anything sparkly.

coloring books are always a hit with my honorary nieces and nephews.

And dude srsly I loved the shit out of my little ponies. not sure how cheap they are now...but....

also, there used to be cheap barbies...(my first barbie was an ice skater barbie that i named tanya noodle.)

Def. include playdate coupons!!!! they're priceless (literally and figuratively). some of my best memories are playdates/babysitting sessions with my cool aunts.

Playdates and sidewalk chalk..it's getting warm enough to go out and get artsy on the sidewalk!

A play purse? Or even a purse you found at the Goodwill (and cleaned up) and put stuff in ..like a hairbrush and a tube of cherry chapstick.

My God, she's going to be four? Bloody hell. But, yes, seconding the pink-and-sparkly stuff - Mini loved anything like that when she was little. Non-official Barbie-type dolls, or hairdresser's sets, or that sort of thing are't too expensive, but go down well. Or books. I'm a big fan of books.

"The Paper Bag Princess."

One of my favorite books to give girls because it ends with the Princess saving herself, standing up to the snotty prince, and walking away happily all by herself. Such a great book!

Other fun things: bubbles, glittery things, sidewalk chalk, jump ropes, temporary tattoo books, coloring books, crayons, smelly markers, or hair accessories.
